ArtsWestchester congratulates the recipients of the 2016 Arts Alive Project and Artist grants.
Awards are made through a competitive process that includes a panel of community members and arts professionals. In addition to the Arts Alive grants, ArtWestchester will also be awarding two Arts Partners Challenge Grants, which foster the use of the arts to teach curricula concepts.
ARTS ALIVE PROJECT GRANTS
, Peekskill Intergenerational Jazz Ensemble Ten weeks of jazz workshops and master classes will be made available for high school students & older adults in Peekskill. This project will also include collaborative jazz performances.
Greenburgh Town Hall, , Greenburgh Kids Short Story Connection Twelve two-hour writing workshops, led by published authors and teachers, will be offered for 9-18 year-old students.
, Elmsford Café a las Siete 2016 These four public events will present elements of Latino culture by offering dance lessons, performances, language instruction, film, & live music performances.
, Choreographer, Mount Vernon Spring & Holiday Senior Shows Musical variety shows will be performed by senior citizens in two seasonal performances.
, Bronxville Little Radical Theatrics 2016 Season This theatre company will present three Broadway-style musicals will to be performed in Yonkers, including “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” and “Rent.”
NIJI No Kai Corp., Valhalla 2016 White Plains Cherry Blossom Festival This free Japanese cultural arts festival will include dance, Taiko drums and martial arts demonstrations during the spring, when cherry blossoms bloom in White Plains.
– , Shenrock Urban Weaving A public art installation will be erected in downtown Yonkers.
, Purdys My Horizons This “cultural and educational exchange” will host arts workshops for children in various mediums include painting, drawing and mixed media.
, Mount Vernon Afrikan Healing Drum and Dance Circle Thirty African dance and drum community workshops will be led at AC-BAW Art Center in Mount Vernon.
, White Plains 2016 Asian American Heritage Festival Both professional and non-professional artists will expose audiences to Asian cultural performances of song, dance and more at an outdoor festival event.
, Ossining Fishing on Henry’s Hudson: Henry Gourdine In this visual and theatrical event, a storyteller from Westchester Collaborative Theater (WCT) will guide a performance of Henry Gourdine’s life as an innovative African American who revolutionized commercial fishing on the Hudson River. A replica/installation of Gourdine’s fishing shanty will be constructed in the Ossining Arts Council’s Steamer Firehouse.
, Ossining Capoeira… going back to our roots This summer workshop, designed for children aged 11 to 16, will introduce elements of dance, rhythm, & movement.
, Peekskill Black History Month: The Canada Lee Project A staged reading of a new work by Hudson Valley playwright Mona Z. Smith will be performed by Esperance Theatre Company.
, Peekskill Open Studios 2016 This grant will provide outreach and marketing support for the annual Peekskill Open Studios weekend.
Mount Vernon PJS Spring Concert Series This organization will host three affordable live jazz concerts in Mount Vernon.
, Sleepy Hollow SHPACATTACK This organization will offer open studios for dance and hip hop sessions. The resulting routines will be performed publicly, at the Ossining Fair, Tarrytown Third Friday and Sleepy Hollow Farmer’s Market.
, Peekskill Black Marble Duo This musical duo will perform Baroque music on period instruments in four performances, taking place in Peekskill, Ossining, Shrub Oak and Mt. Vernon.
, New Rochelle Intergenerational Community Music Program Collaborative events in New Rochelle will feature a junior choir with local seniors. These events will provide an intergenerational, musical and social experience for student and senior participants as well as an entertaining experience for the general public.
, Mamaroneck Fall 2016 Concert This concert will feature works of Westchester-based composer William Eckfeld with an opening performance by White Plains High School honors ensemble.
, Larchmont Artist Learning Residency in Bubble Science STEMtastic Saturday Festival will feature a performance of the Bubble Trouble Show as well as arts workshops aimed at teaching STEM and STEAM skills.
, Tarrytown Increasing Community Access to Dance The Y Dance Academy will hold Open Studio Rehearsals, when the public will be invited to attend rehearsals of four performing youth groups (Ballet Repertory, Tap Workshop, Youth Ensemble and Teen Ensemble). These groups will also perform at Tarrytown Third Friday events.
, Valhalla Concert Series The Kindred Folk series will consist of monthly folk music concerts to be performed at Embark, Peekskill.
, New Rochelle Spirits and Souls – Huguenot Voices from the Trinity Burial Grounds New monologues will be written and original music composed, from the perspective of Huguenot settlers buried in Trinity Burial Grounds, for a new historical production.
, Ossining One Act Festival This festival event will include performances of new one-act plays, which will be performed at Steamer Company Firehouse in Ossining.
, Yonkers Yonkers Riverfest – Artists Showcase This annual event presents an Open-Air Artist Showcase, featuring works from 20+ local artists.
ARTS ALIVE ARTIST GRANTS
, Scarsdale Faces and Identities Lo will create a series of clay busts / sculptures that feature community members of diverse backgrounds.
, Irvington Color of the World This new dance piece will feature choreography that is based on, and inspired by, an anti-bullying message.
, Tarrytown Westchester Warriors Rizzo will produce a documentary and photo exhibition about soldiers living in Westchester County.
Arts Alive Grants are made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program (DEC), a re-grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the NYS Legislature, and administered by ArtsWestchester.
