Catching up with national powerlifting champion and community leader Tamara Mack

FOLLOW ON TWITTER! Tamara Mack at the Fox Theatre. Andy Morales/AllSportsTucson.com Photo. Her résumé is varied and impressive: World-class fashion designer, model, successful small businesswoman, actress, film and television producer, public relations icon, director of marketing and sales with the Fox Theatre and, of course, mother. Oh, she is also one of the nation’s top athletes. Tamara Mack holds three United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) Master’s records in the Squat, Bench and Deadlift. In fact, Mack broke some of her own records at the National Championships held in Las Vegas last week. She shattered her own record in Deadlift when she pulled 315 lbs and broke her record in the Squat at 215 lbs. and came home a national champion again. AllSportsTucson.com recently sat down with Mack in the historic Fox Theatre and she was gracious enough to give us a few minutes of her valuable time to let us catch up on her busy life and some of the many projects she has going on: AST:Tell us about your recent championship and how are feeling so soon after such a major competition. MACK: I hate the down time. Like everything else, I wanted to get back and start right back up but by Monday I was barely moving. Q: You compete in both powerlifting and figure competition. Did you compete in sports at Rincon/University and can you talk about how you got started in powerlifting and what was your motivation? A: I competed in Track & Field, threw the shot put, did the long jump and played tennis in high school but my father was a professional bodybuilder so I always had the sense of health and fitness. It really began in 2005 when Sylvester Stallone had his INSTONE Life Change Challenge and I felt that could be me. I was healthy but I felt I could transform my life to be more physically fit and I became the spokesperson for his nutrition line. I also sold my business, got a divorce and began working for the Salvation Army and I worked there for ten years in publicrelations. Courtesy Photo. Q: Tell us little about your background in fashion design and your very successful Unbreakable Gear line that appears to be in high demand. A: After college I went to work in event planning and I opened a children’s retail boutique called Boomers and we had multiple stores and we have online sales. I run Unbreakable Gear with my partner Jon Marshall and we specialize in fitness supplies and apparel. We are also moving into daily wear and are sponsoring other athletes like world-record powerlifter Chuck Hudson. He will be wearing our gear at the Olympia Invite this year. Q: We understand you are releasing a feature film soon and one of the actors is our friend Jay Dobyns. Can you tell us your background in production and anything you want to say to promote your film? A: I produced and hosted “Arizona’s Top Model” along with a couple fashion shows for local television. I also co-founded Medrosa Film Productions which led to our first film, “Dead On Site” and wewill be releasing “ The Z” soon. I am studying mixed martial arts and am a stunt fighter on the Lights Out Fight Team so I am producing and acting in my films along with several local fighters and actors. “The Z” is in the genre of Martial Arts, Zombie and Horror so it will get great exposure at film festivals that specialize in those areas. We filmed it in the “Sin City” and “Creep Show” method that we think the audience will love and it was all filmed locally and it includes predatory zombie killers, fighting and horror which I am also a fan of. It will get showings here at the Fox Theatre and at the Loft and then to DVD sales. Q: With all that going on you still find time to help promote our local Fox Theatre where people such as my father once watched the “Mickey Mouse Club” and legendary actors like John Wayne sneaked in to catch movies while they were in town. It was quite lucky for our community that you were chosen to promote the Fox. Tell us a bit about your vision. A: I wantit to be our community center where people come to celebrate. I want our community to use our venue. We’ve hosted proms, weddings and birthdays. I really feel it’s more than just a concert hall, the Fox Theatre is our Community Hall and we are revamping our membership to include more member-only benefits. Q: With all you’ve accomplished, including your many successful businesses and national championships and records, is there anything you enjoyed the most or miss the most? A: I live my life from event to event, goal to goal. Everything is bigger and better and there’s more to do. I am lucky because I am comfortable on the stage and I have a daughter who attends Catalina Foothills (Maddy) and she works with me. I just can’t wait for the next thing. Mack, and her partner and fellow champion Marshall, work out at Snap Fitness on River and Mack is currently changing gears from Powerlifting to fitness competition. And then, of course, there will be something else…..     Andy Morales wasrecognized by the AIA as the top high school reporter in 2014 and has been a youth, high school and college coach for over 30 years.
