Despite the fact that I’m not really that much of a soccer fan, you’d be hard pressed to miss all the coverage of the 2015 Women’s World Cup being played in Canada.

You’d think that the US Women’s National Team beating odds on favorite Germany 2-0 yesterday would be the big story of the day. While highlight packages abounded on sports coverage, you would think given all the black eyes that the sports governing body FIFA has taken over the last few weeks, they’d be overjoyed to give some positive coverage to their premiere event at the moment.

But again you’d be wrong. Instead, a FIFA spokesperson kept a straight face while saying, “Due to their current commitments in Zurich, the FIFA President and the FIFA Secretary General (Jerome Valcke) will remain at the FIFA Headquarters.” You can read the whole story on that .

WTF?

This is beyond embarrassing for FIFA. It’s bad enough Blatter has downgraded and denigrated the women’s game (while pretending to be a champion of it), now he can’t be bothered to show up?

I know Blatter is very unpopular, particularly with the female players (and the US team especially), but if Roger Goodell can show up for all the stuff he does and get unrelentingly booed, Blatter should put his big boy pants on and get his butt to Canada.

One more note of ridiculousness is that following on the heels of all the women’s games in this World Cup being contested on artificial turf (showing complete disdain for the women yet again), comes the news that security isn’t anywhere near as tight for all the Women’s World Cup games as it was for the men’s World Cup.

While I can understand the notion that differences in crowd makeup and the location of the games could play into a lessened need for strict security measures, I think the measures should be just as tight as they were for the men’s tournament.

Security was tighter for the semi-final games and the title match will see the most stringent security in place. But imagine if something had happened in an earlier round game? How would you like to be a target because the powers-that-be weren’t as concerned about being attacked simply because a lot of young girls come to the games?

It just seems that FIFA is so hidebound by tradition and corruption, not to mention pure stupidity, they can’t get out of their own way.

With the US women in the World Cup title match, ratings are going to be higher than normal in the US. From everything I’ve seen on TV and what little I’ve read, this has been a remarkably entertaining World Cup tournament. But it is almost in spite of how FIFA is running things.

They just don’t get it.
