After a very successful first show FightStar Championship are back this weekend as they put on their second show, live at the Apna Venue in Huddersfield and what a line up they are putting on for fight fans. With a whole host of the UK’s most talented Amateur fighters, mixed in with a K-1 and two professional bouts, this card is a perfect way to spend your Saturday evening. SD MMA UK will be covering the show and here is a little preview to some of the fights on the card.
Main Event: (Pro) Danny Tombs vs Jordan Thompson
The main event of the evening see’s Danny Tombs and Jordan Thompson battle it out, with the winner getting a shot at the FightStars British Middleweight title.
Danny Tombs comes into this fight after a successful professional debut at UCFC 5 in July. On that night he took on Ryan Boyd and the TKO victory in the first round. It was the best start to his pro career and will definitely give him the confidence going into this fight. To make Tombs even more of a difficult fighter for his opponents he has a professional boxing record of 8-2 and trains out of a fantastic team in S18 gym.
His opponent Jordan Thompson is just as deadly in his stand up, with him being undefeated in his professional boxing career at 9-0. He didn’t make the start he would have liked to his professional career being defeated but he will surely come into this one looking to avenge that defeat and keep progressing in the world of MMA.
Both fighters are definitely confident in their stand up skills and this fight could be an explosive one for the fans, but this is MMA and skills are needed in the all round game. It will be an interesting fight for sure and one will walk away knowing they will have a shot at the gold.
Co Main Event: UAR Welterweight Title Fight: vs
Fighting out of Team Fulinkazan is Kevin Mullen, who aims to add his second title in just over a month. At in Leeds he was a late replacement to battle Nathaniel Brown and he looked very impressive in winning the belt. The win came via split decision but it was obvious for all to see the pedigree Mullen has. Then just two weeks ago he stepped into the Full Contact Contender cage for and got a first round submission, (rear naked choke), victory in the first round over Tomasz Wojtyna. Mullen is somebody to watch out for and is unbeaten so far in his amateur career and will be a tough test for anybody.
However standing at the other side of the cage will be Mush Aslani who comes into this fight with a lot of confidence and the backing of two fantastic teams in Lions Paw MMA and Farrell MMA. Hailing from Iran and training in the sport for just a year, Aslani is someone who has the pedigree to go far and with the backing of top coaches like Ali Arish and Andrew De-Vent you know he is set for a big future. Aslani is making his debut in this one but don’t let that fool you, he is raring to go and has a lot of respect for his opponent, as he told us:
“I watch his fight on the internet and I think he’s a good, experienced, guy with really good stand up skills. He is a good fighter, with good conditioning and it will be a good fight”.
This fight has fight of the night written all over it and has the potential to be talked about for months to come. Both guys will want to have the championship wrapped around their waist and will give everything in the fight. Who have you got in this one: Mullen or Aslani? Difficult to call, I know.
Pro: vs
The other professional bout on the card takes place in the light heavyweight division between two fighters who are in good form ahead of this match up. At one side of the cage we have UK Alpha Male fighter Andy Winchester-Bennett who is currently 1-1-0 as a professional. In his first two matches as a professional Andy has learnt so much and it has helped greatly to his continuing development. The UK Alpha Male’s are a fantastic gym and Andy soaks up so much on a daily basis and has power in his hands but also an all round, solid, game. This weekend he is looking forward to getting in the cage and knows just what to expect from his opponent:
“I know he’s a big game wrestler and loves his take downs. I expect him to be chasing me a lot during the fight but whether he catches me or not is a different story”.
His opponent is Adam Florence who is unbeaten at 1-0-0 as a professional. He is aiming to be the best and knows that there is lots of tough fights to come, starting this weekend. Training out of Team Adrenaline has progressed Adam on greatly and each person at the gym has shaped him up to this point. Also he has a natural talent for the sport and all that mixed together makes for one rising talent in the sport. He has a fantastic wrestling back and is ready for whatever his opponent throws at him on the night.
“Well me and Andy are quite familiar from our amateur days, I know he’s a fan of his striking and I’m confident my wrestling background can keep him at bay. I look forward to seeing him try to strike when he’s being turned inside out on the floor!”
The light heavyweight division is one of the most exciting divisions in Mixed Martial Arts and this fight will be no different. It seems like it is going to be the classic striker versus wrestler match up, but don’t let that fool you. In MMA everyone is skilled in all areas and neither of these guys will give in easily. Prepare for fireworks.
UAR:vs James Duckett
The guys at FightStar Championship are known for top quality match making and this fight is no different as fans will be treated to a fight between two rising amateur fighters in the North of England.
At one side we have Aire Valley Martial Arts standout Deon Bruning who is coming of the back of an impressive victory at Caged Fighters 6 when he got a decision victory over Adam Khan. In the fight Deon showed great control, stand up and ground skills to keep his opponent at bay. He will close to getting the finish on numerous occasions but getting the time in the cage was important, just as staying focused was. This weekend’s fight will be a different test for him but he is ready to get back in the cage and put on a fantastic fight. He told us:
“As always, I never find out much about my opponent, but I am familiar with Predators Gym. They have some good fighters and coaches, so I’m expecting James will be a well rounded and conditioned fighter with a very experienced camp behind him. Should make for a very exciting fight!”
Facing Deon is James Duckett who comes from one of the UK’s top teams in Manchester Predators and steps into the cage on the back of a great victory. Recently at the very first ECC event in Blackpool, he took on and defeated Nathan Ferguson in one of the quickest fights on the night. How long did it take you ask? Just 36 seconds for him to get the Submission (Guillotine Choke) victory. All Manchester Predators are trained to the highest level and have many of the country’s best professional and amateur fighters, so James will be ready for whatever is thrown at him.
Just from writing about this fight and seeing what these two fighters bring to the table is getting me up for the fight already. Both have great coaches and team mates behind them, but they also have top quality skill sets which can only make for one hell of a fight.
UAR: Robbie Thacker vs
Another exciting fight on the card features Jonny Saville and Robbie Thacker who are both looking to get their first win at Amateur A class.
Saville trains out Farrell MMA and has a record of 0-1-0, but don’t let that fool you as Saville is someone who has a bright future in the sport. In his Amateur A debut he took on a late replacement due to his original opponent not showing up on the day of the fight. Saville admits this didn’t put him in the best frame of mind but he has learnt a great deal from it which he can put into action this weekend. His two coaches Paul Birkhead and Andy Farrell have been crucial to his development as a fighter but also his team mates have greatly helped as well. He knows a little bit about his opponent and knows their team very well and is ready for all challenges.
“I know he fights out of team Fulinkazan who are a very well respected team in Yorkshire. Before I fought as an Amateur A I did a few Amateur C bouts without any head shots. The only Amateur C bout I lost was to Ben Holdsworth from that team who is still unbeaten and has now claimed the Caged Fighters 66kg title. Every fighter I’ve watched from that team is very well rounded with great leg kicks and a solid ground game so I’m really preparing for everything”.
His opponent is Team Fulinkazan’s Robbie Thacker who makes his UAR debut on the night. As stated by Jonny, he comes from a fantastic team who have championship experience and many talented fighters and coaches on staff. With it being his debut you know he will be keen to impress and have the skills necessary to test his opponent in every avenue.
Be ready for a fantastic fight in the featherweight division here as both will put everything on the line to get the victory. Each of them has trained hard and its nearly time to see them get it on in the cage.
