Matt Gilliard began studying Yoseikan Budo in 1993 under the supervision of Sensei Troy Hester and eventually Sensei Hudson Harris. In 1995 he opened his first dojo at the University Of North Alabama, which he ran until he relocated to Huntsville in 1999. He was promoted to Shodan (first degree black belt) in 2002, to Nidan (second degree black belt) in 2005, and to Sandan (third degree black belt) in 2013.

In addition to his training with Senseis Hester and Harris, Gilliard-sensei has trained extensively with the Technical Director of the United States Yoseikan Budo Association, Dr. Glenn Pack, Hanshi.

Having an interest in other martial arts, Gilliard-sensei has also explored Hakka Ryu Jujitsu, Tang Soo Do, Jeet Kun Do, American Kenpo, Escrima, and other arts.

Assistant Instructor: Tim O’Neil

Tim O’Neil has practiced Yoseikan Budo since he moved to Huntsville in 2001. He was promoted to Shodan (first degree black belt) in the summer of 2009. He has instructed at both Rocket City Martial Arts and the university level since 2007. He values the study of aikido as both a practical form of self-defense as well as studying the art within its historical context.
