Dr. Rudolph Puana is a double board certified Anesthesiologist with traditional ties to the Hawaiian Islands. He serves as director at large of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians Hawaii Board. Being Native Hawaiian Dr. Puana was born and raised on Oahu where he graduated with his Bachelors from the University of Hawaii. During his Undergraduate years he was also accepted to the esteemed Harvard University for Biomedical Research Studies where his love for research and medicine truly began. He was then accepted with a full academic scholarship to Creighton University School of Medicine.
After receiving his medical degree, he immediately accepted a position at Scott and White Texas A&M University as an Anesthesia resident. After four years he then extended his training even further at the prestigious MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston where he finished his second board certification, continued his research and eventually became the youngest Associate Medical Director of MD Anderson’s Intensive Care Unit. It was there at MD Anderson that in addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Puana also conducted research in his own laboratory; pioneering a new understanding and novel pathway for a common pain drug Morphine. After numerous awards and worldwide publications from his research and clinical experience he felt that there was still something missing from his practice. It was this research, clinical experience, training, and his want to be home in the islands that propelled Dr. Puana back home to be a part of his greatest achievement: A modern, up to date, invasive, acuteand chronic pain clinic that himself and the people of Hawaii could be proud of.
He recently published, The Red Headed Hawaiian, a memoir of his life growing up in Oahu. The Red-headed Hawaiian is about the hard work and sacrifices that have to be made in order to achieve one’s dreams. It’s a story that shows toughness is not about how hard one can hit, but that true grit exists only when one is willing to commit to working hard and doing the things he hates most.
