Our combined MMA & JKD curriculum is designed to teach you the practical means of self defense as well as the character building life lesson philosophies of a traditional martial art. Whether you want functional self-defense, a healthier and more fit lifestyle, or just to meet fun people in a positive & supportive environment, we can help you meet your goals.
We achieve this by developing the body through modern martial arts cross-training, and by developing the mind through a traditional martial arts environment.
We study all 5-areas of empty-hand (no-weapons) self defense: 1. Striking 2. Clinching (grabbing) 3. Hand Trapping 4. Manipulation (takedowns, joint locks, chokes etc…) 5. Grappling (defending yourself on the ground)
At KSK These areas are studied individually as well as in combination with one another. We have a very comprehensive and organized curriculum in order to help a student progress more quickly by providing them with a solid foundation.
Our MMA-JKD curriculum utilizes seven major branches of the martial arts, to form its core fundamentals: 1. Muay Thai 2. Panantukan 3. Jun Fan Gung Fu 4. Wing Chun 5. Maphilindo Silat 6. Combat Submission Wrestling 7. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Because a student is exposed to a wide range of tactics, it lets a person capitalize on what they are good at, and develop that which they are not. This type of training allows people of many different body types and ages to study with us.
Our goal is NOT to have all of our students look the same, it is for all of our students to develop according to their own body type and discover how to make the principals behind the techniques work for them as an individual.
The formal name for our combined MMA & JKD curriculum is Kai-Shin Jeet Kune Do (we also sometimes abbreviate it as MMA-JKD). “Kai-Shin” literally translates as “Open Mind” in Okinawan. The term “Jeet Kune Do” translates to “Way of the Intercepting Fist” in Chinese, and was coined by the late Bruce Lee. These two wordings, Kai-Shin & Jeet Kune Do, were put together by the creator of the curriculum, T. Kent Nelson, and reflect his personal views and methods on teaching well-rounded martial arts in a specific logical order to help the student learn best. “Kai-Shin” denotes Nelson’s personal expression and study, while “Jeet Kune Do” pays respect to the original origins of his martial arts roots and family (ie. Guro Dan Inosanto & Sijo Bruce Lee). Nelson first began to develop his views of martial principal study in 1992, and his approach was recognized and endorsed by the Unity Martial Arts Association on May 13, 1997. He has been evolving and improving on his vision ever since, training with such martial art living legends as Guro Dan Inosanto and Sifu Paul Vunak, two of the original pioneers of Mixed Martial Arts and Street Self Defense.
These two men were also responsible for the spread of Fillipino Martial Arts and Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do / Jun Fan Gung Fu. Nelson has been certified as an instructor under both of these great teachers.
The more traditional environment and etiquette that Nelson places in his curriculum comes from his background under Okinawan masters’ Sensei Tadashi Yamashita (certified 10th degree black belt and martial arts movie star) and Taika Seiyu Oyata (certified 10th degree black belt and the worlds leading pressure point expert).
In order to balance both the modern & traditional elements of his curriculum, Nelson is always researching new training methods and approaches. Two of the most significant influences on the curriculum has been Nelson’s private teachers, MMA teacher and Synergy Martial Arts founder Shawn Kitzman, and Attributive Martial Arts founder Sifu David Hatch. Kitzman holds Instructor levels under Dan Insonato and Paul Vunak (JKD & FMA), and is a certified Coach under Sensei Erik Paulson (founder of Combat Submission Wrestling). Sifu Hatch holds high level instructor rankings under some of the most recognized authorities in the world, such as Dan Inosanto (JKD, FMA, Silat), Fancis Fong (Wing Chun), Ajarn Chai (Muay Thai), Erik Paulson (Combat Submission Wrestling), and Manog Ted Buot (Balintawak Eskrima).
