Myles “Fury” Jury is not you average mixed martial artist. Jury is what the experts refer to as ‘the new breed of the sport'; a hybrid fighter, well versed in all aspects of the demanding game. And, when you combine the baby faced looks of a Hollywood actor with the ferocity and tenacity of a young Mike Tyson, you’re left with a dangerous concoction of a modern day warrior with tunnel vision, glaring all the way to the top.
It’s all a means to an end. It’s a quest to be the best in the world and someday become a God standing amongst mortals, standing proud with the glimmering hardware of the world championship belt firmly strapped around his waist.
Myles Jury was born on October 31, 1988 in Hazel Park, Michigan. His parents divorced when he was just two years old. He had an average childhood. He attended school and lived with his father.
Of course, becoming a product of a broken home, children often find themselves in the middle of their parents personal battles. It was no different for Myles. Adversity became all too familiar and many times he felt alone and longing for acceptance.
His acceptance came in the form of a competitive sport; the basis for his martial art foundation. In seventh grade, he joined the wrestling team at Beecher Junior High, going 12-2 his first year out. Finally, an outlet for all of his frustrations. The harder he trained, the better he performed. It became an addiction.
Competition became his best friend. And, he learned how to turn a negative situation into a positive outcome. When he turned thirteen, Jury began training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Don Richard, a highly respected black belt under BJJ legend, “Caique”. When he was fourteen he began his transition intoMMA: Mixed Martial Arts. It seemed to be a natural fit with his grappling experience. He was drawn to the sport and seeing how happy training and learning made him, his family gave their full support.
However, training and actually fighting are two different things. And when your teenage son decides to step in the ring for real, feeling change…. Quickly!
Jury recalls, “I decided to take my first fight when I was fifteen because I loved to train and wanted to compete and use the skills I was being taught. I don’t even think I told my family when I was going to fight, but once they found out they were not terribly happy. I won that fight, but I remember the adrenaline rush and the nervousness that comes along with it. I guess that really never goes away, but now days, my experience helps to get me through the nervous moments.”
Not wanting to follow in the footsteps of his father, who was a roofer by trade, Jury moved to nearby Fenton, Michigan with his mother and stepfather when he was in ninth grade, so he could concentrate more on his wrestling and martial arts. He wanted to give his craft the focused it deserved.
He worked throughout the Summer’s as an assistant to his step father who was a mechanic, but that was not the job for him either. He was not opposed to hard work. After all, hard work and diligence is the true basis of any martial artist. However, there was something better out there. Jury knew that if he stayed true to his path, his destination for greatness could become a reality.
It was at that point he decided that combat sports was the field he wanted to pursue.
When it comes to today’s youth, you’re hard pressed to find a kid with the passion and drive as Myles Jury. During his high school years, many of his classmates went out for baseball, football and basketball; sports Jury dabbled in as a young child. Others worked part time jobs at the mall. Not Myles though. He spent his free time in the gyms honing his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and fine tuning his passion for kick boxing, wrestling, and the other pieces associated with the MMA puzzle. There was focus and dedication, even from a young age when distractions are almost inevitable.
His senior year of high school, Jury won the district championship and went on to become All State taking fifth place. Today, his picture still hangs on the wall at Fenton High School.
After high school, his passion for combat sports grew deeper. He trained. He dreamed. He competed. He’s won the Arnold’s World Championship purple belt division. He’s won many local Jiu Jitsu tournaments such as the Champions Challenge, Michigan Open, Can-American Championships, Relson U.S. Championships, and even won the Arnold’s Gi and No Gi 18 and under division. His mixture of wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu makes him a threat for anyone who dares to hit the mat with him.
Eventually, the fights came more often and the stage became larger. Training became more serious and the focus became more intense. In 2013, Jury received his black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He is expected to receive his black belt in 2013.
Jury has amassed a 15-1 professional mixed martial arts record. He’s gone 64-4 in his nine years of Jiu Jitsu experience, and 4-0-2 in kickboxing.
Today, Jury calls sunny Phoenix, AZ home. He trains throughout the day at Power MMA while traveling the world to absorb as much as he can to learn to be a better person and martial artist. He’s had the opportunity to learn from and train with world class athletes. He is on the path to becoming one himself. The sky is the limit for Myles Jury.
He has made a promise to himself to become the best. His dreams and goals have never changed. Spend fifteen minutes with Myles Jury and you would never know about any of the trials and tribulation he endured as a youth. He is full of positivity. He surrounds himself with it.
