SHARE TWEET SMS SEND EMAIL Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion said she was never the same after eating a first-round punch from Holly Holm. In a thorough interview with – was released on Monday – Rousey finally opened up about her recent title loss at UFC 193. After a reign of dominance that made her a mainstream star and the UFC’s biggest star, Rousey (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) suffered an embarrassing to Holly Holm (10-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) at this past month’s pay-per-view stadium show in Australia. Holm, a former pro boxer, simply outclassed her Olympic-medalist opponent and repeatedly tagged her with strikes, knocking out some of Rousey’s teeth and cutting the inside of her mouth. The once-dominant champion – one who had defeated 11 of 12 opponents in the first round, including nine in a minute or less – looked downright lost in the matchup. According to Rousey, she was in a daze early in the fight. From ESPN: “I got hit in that first round. … I cut my lip open and knocked a couple of myteeth loose. I was out on my feet from the very beginning.” “I wasn’t thinking clearly. I had that huge cut in my mouth and I just spit [the blood] out at my feet. Then they brought the bucket over and I’m like, ‘Why didn’t I spit it in the bucket?’ I never spit on the ground.” “It was like a dumbed-down dreamy version of yourself making decisions. … I was just trying to shake myself out of it. I kept saying to myself, ‘You’re OK, keep fighting. You’re OK, keep fighting.'” “I just feel so embarrassed. How I fought after that is such an embarrassing representation of myself. I wasn’t even (expletive) there.” Following the loss – and even before – Rousey took some criticism for her choice of camp. Many, including Rousey’s own mother, , Glendale Fighting Club’s Edmond Tarverdyan, and even called him a “terrible” instructor who’s a “bad person.” Immediately after UFC 193, that criticism increased. While Tarverdyan was questioned on a personal level, many critics pointed to Rousey’s lack oftop-level training partners at the California gym and wondered if it’s stunted her growth as a fighter. However, it appears her title loss isn’t going to result in a new camp, and Rousey is pledging alliance to her longtime coach, despite the doubters. “Of course I’m staying [with Tarverdyan],” Rousey told ESPN. “That’s my mom’s opinion, not mine.” For complete coverage of , check out the section of the site. , , , , , , More News
