Supremacy MMA Review (360)

What do you get when you cross Mortal Kombat with UFC? Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, are a big deal in the sports entertainment industry as well as the martial arts world. It seems that every martial art that wants to succeed now has to reinvent itself as a Mixed Martial Arts. With the likes of Pride and UFC raking in the cash, it seems only natural that games developers would want to get a slice of the pie. UFC is currently preparing its third game, whilst EA have dipped into the market with its own game, MMA. I kept coming back to it What both of that above mentioned games provide is a very deep and complex look at the world of MMA. I personally loved , but did find that the stats and training aspect became a little repetitive. I also found that at times the control and the moves were just way to complex to pull off easily. EA’s MMA fell foul of this. Matches could feel a little plodding. Supremacy MMA looks to rectify this. Taking a cast of less well known fighters, including women,Supremacy MMA plays like a cross between Mortal Kombat and UFC Undisputed. Gone are the complexities of other titles, no gently rotating the right stick whilst praying you were going to sink a submission. This is smash mouth and proud of it. Each character has his or her own styles and features, from the Wrestling of Ilya Klimenko ti the BJJ of Demian Reis, they all play slightly differently. Some are easier to do throws with, others have better kicks etc. Each also has their own story to be told in main campaign. Choose a fighter and follow them through their own personal journey, from prison to MMA glory to falls from grace. The stories are told with static ink style drawing and some pretty awful voice acting. Seriously, they would have been better off making you read the words yourself. The story is just there to link together the fights and really should have been left out. The inclusion of the female fighters is great, however here it feels a little gimmicky. Their stories areeven less fleshed out than the male fighters, which is a shame and a missed opportunity. As for looks, well, it is kind of middle of the road. The environments are gritty and varied. You fight in a prison, warehouses, dojos and the occasional rings. The characters themselves look a little last gen to me – however, the animations are pretty slick. This is an adult game and as such there is a lot of very graphic violence. Blood flows merrily, bodies bruise quickly and finishes are shown in some seriously bone breaking glory. I actually winced when I finished a fight with a kick to my opponents leg and watch it snap in slow motion. Unlike other simulations of MMA, this is a pure arcade affair. You have a health bar and a power bar. As the power bar fills you are able to pull of specials. If your health bar reaches zero, it is game over. This leads to a fairly frustrating realisation that locking in a great submission won’t finish the fight, but rather will reduce the health. As an arcadestyle game, the controls need to be fast and responsive. I have read a lot of criticism about the controls on Supremacy. However, I actually found them to be alright. You do find yourself mashing from time to time, but everything was easy to pull off and it felt ok. Every now and then I would find that my moves didn’t happen when I expected them to, but not often. So far I have not said much good about the game. I have not even mentioned the soundtrack – I had to turn it off after 20 minutes of raw heavy guitar riffs, and I love raw heavy guitar riffs. I will be honest, this is not the best MMA game out there and it certainly is not the best game you are going to play this year. But, and his is a Beyonce style big but, it is fun. I found myself getting really into it – always wanting to have just one more go. The difficulty levels and pacing were always fair and balanced, with very few matches ending in me wanting to throw my Xbox out of the window, something that UFC could not say! Ikept coming back to it as well, something I don’t do much with games these days. All in all it is not as good as it could have been. There is a solid foundation for an arcade fighter, but it just lacks polish. However, give it a chance and you may find you actually like it, just like I did. The Good: I enjoyed it. The Bad: Graphics are weak. Soundtrack is horrible. Stories are not great;         Bronze Y Award 3.5 / 5 The following two tabs change content below.
