The majority of the edged weapon DT courses for Law Enforcement Officers teach that the minimum safe distance is 15-21 ft. The simple fact is this is unrealistic when you consider the nature of the job for almost all Corrections & Field Officers.
Most edged weapon assaults on officers occur either during cell extraction, inmate on inmate attack, on scene interview process, suspect searches and domestic calls. Therefore the majority of the attacks occur spontaneously and in close quarters.
The Reality (Statistics drawn from both the F.B.I. and Calibre Press)
– Edged weapons are the most commonly used weapon for killing people (7 in 20)
– In half of the incidents of muggings on men the offender is armed with a sharp instrument
-The majority of “street” type people carry some kind of edged weapon be it legal or illegal.
– Edged weapon attackers are responsible for 3% of all armed attacks on police
– Firearm attacks account for 4% armed attacks on police
– Both of the above stats represent fatalities
Subjects shot: 10% die from their wounds
Subjects stabbed: 30% die from their wounds
– Since 1980 the number of people routinely carrying knives in North America has increased by 92%.
